Highlights of African Designers - Nigeria Fashion Week

Africa-influenced fashion, through Yves St. Laurent's 60's collections to Derek Lam and Proenza Schouler's Spring 2012 shows, are already featured in designs for years. Now, however, increasingly more African designers are using both their heritage and international trends to achieve attention around the world stage.

ARISE Magazine Fashion Week in Lagos, now in the second year, highlighted the job of mostly African or Africa-influenced designers. The 77 designers offered a selection of outfits blending traditional fabrics with international design, increasing this tedious with elegant dresses and offering a flavor of high fashion in a hotel-turned-fashion haven, separated from your hustle-and-bustle of the megacity of Lagos.

However the struggles affecting the poor as well as the rich wrought damage to an event designed to run six days. The very first two days were canceled as electricity complaints are rampant in the city where most rely on generators for power. Nevertheless the show finally began and drew an audience that embraces African fashion much less a sideshow, but like a main element of international design.
